This work is polyphonic in texture while maintaining standard chord progression between all voices. It is sang in legato style it keeps a steady tempo with slight ritardandos where the text requires. Very few dynamic changes shows the restraint necessary for singing in church during the Classical period. Soft, reflective, and respectful.

This madrigal is not just beautiful, but has an important message. True now more than it was 400 years ago, more geese than swans live, more fools than wise. That wise swan has just a few profound statements at the end of her life. But you can't hear her over all those foolish geese who just can't shut up! Maybe we should all pipe down and listen to her a bit!

Voce8 are undoubtedly one of the leading chamber choices around at present and their vocal quality, which is in evidence again here, is beyond reproach. They have a signature approach of carefully measured individual dynamics, immaculate tuning, steady tempos and high levels of production to ensure that nothing is left to chance. Unfortunately, the limitations of that approach are also apparent here. This is one of Bruckner's finest choral works - and indeed one of the finest motets of the 19th century - but here it is reduced to a pleasant aural experience. The heart-breaking passage leading up to m.60, for example, is just rolled over without a hint of extra dynamics or slackening tempo. Sorry folks, the trees are beautiful but I'd like to see the wood too.

I first heard it when watching the film Master and Commander: The Far Side Of The World (one of my favorite films of all time) and thought it was one of the most beautiful pieces of music I had ever heard. I knew then that when I got married I had to have it played at my wedding.
